Understanding Electrocardiograms (EKGs/ECGs)

An EKG or ECG is an abbreviation for Electrocardiogram is a test to determine the heart's activity. An EKG is used to check the rhythm of your heart, any indications of a heart attack, Ischemia (which means - weak blood flow to your heart) and any other abnormalities like thickened heart muscles, arrhythmia etc.

What does an EKG test involve?

An EKG reveals two kinds of information. 1) Measures the time electrical waves take to pass through the heart. If the waves take too long, move too fast, or pass irregularly, then there is a problem. 2) Measures the electrical activity in the heart. The doctor/provider will be able to figure if the heart is being overworked based on the results.

Does it hurt?

No. There is no pain or any risk involved in performing an EKG.
