Understanding allergies

We have allergens all around us, and most of us experience allergic reactions – some more so than others. Our allergic reaction depends on how our immune system responds to the allergens.

What are the common allergy symptoms

Allergy symptoms depend on the allergen that's causing the reaction, and can range from mild to severe. Symptoms include:

  • Itchy skin
  • Rashes
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Shortness of breath
  • Headache
  • Cough

A food allergy can cause:

  • Vomiting
  • Stomach cramps
  • Hives
  • Swelling of the tongue
  • Anaphylaxis

What are the common allergens

Allergens could be any foreign substance and your immune system's reaction the foreign substance. Could be seasonal allergens like pollen, bee stings, or pet dander. It could also be a reaction to something you ate.

How do you prevent allergies?

While it's difficult to prevent all allergies, you could take some precautions. For example during allergy season try and stay indoors when pollen is high. Track your activities and food you eat to try and narrow down what you're allergic to.
