What is an STD?
STDs stands for Sexually Transmitted Diseases and is also referred to on occasion as STIs, Sexually Transmitted Infections are diseases that are spread through intimate contact. Most of the STDs can be treated and respond to antibiotics.
Why get tested?
While most STDs can be treated with antibiotics, many cases go undiagnosed and therefore untreated. The consequences of untreated infections can be severe. Infertility, stillbirths, and increased HIV risk are some of the risks.
Who needs to get tested?
It's recommended that anyone who is sexually active get regularly screened. It's not part of the annual health checkup and needs to be done separately. That being said, certain groups are more vulnerable and need to make STD/STI screening as part of their annual healthcare routine.
It's recommended that all sexually active women less than the age of 25 go in and get checked for chlamydia and gonorrhea on an annual basis. Sexually active gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men are also at greater risk and should get screened regularly.
