Do you really need a flu shot?

Did you know that it's flu season already, and you start seeing all the signs around you reminding you to "Get your flu shot!"

And you ask yourself - is the flu shot actually necessary?

The short answer - yes. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone over the age of 6 months get a flu shot every year. It not just protects you and your family, but also protects everyone in the community.

Here are the three things you can do to fights against the flu -

Get a flu shot

Flu vaccination has a lot of important benefits. It reduces the likelihood of getting flu related illnesses, doctors' visits, and missed school or work. Flu vaccines have shown to be life-saving in children.

Preventive steps

You can take action everyday to stop the spread of germs. Simple but good health habits like covering your cough and washing your hands have shown to be quite effective in stopping the spread of germs and keep the flu at bay.

Treatment

Even if you get the flu, it can be treated. Most people respond to regular medication and rest. However, if you are in the high risk group, or very sick you should contact your healthcare provider to see if you need antiviral drugs.

Flu season generally arrives in October and lasts until May.  Get the vaccine prior to the season start to ensure that your body has enough time to build up immunity! You can get the flu shot at your primary care physician’s office or at your local urgent care facility.
