So what causes of Pink Eye?
Pink Eye or Conjunctivitis could be due to many reasons, though the main causes of pink eye are bacterial infection, viral infection, allergens, and irritants -
Bacterial conjunctivitis is a highly contagious bacterial infection of the eye that sometimes occurs together with an ear infection, is more common in children than adults.
Viral conjunctivitis, typically begins in one eye and then spreads to the other eye within a short period of time.
Allergic conjunctivitis is a result of the body's reaction to allergens, such as pollen from trees, dust mites, or makeup. Unlike viral and bacterial conjunctivitis, this form of pink eye but it does usually occur in both eyes.
Irritants that cause conjunctivitis can include a chemicals, fumes, dust, or smoke. Contact lenses that are worn longer than recommended or not cleaned can also lead to this form of pink eye.
Pink Eye caused by allergens or irritants is not contagious.
What are the typical symptoms of Pink Eye?
The symptoms may vary, but usually include:
White of eye(s) turning pink or red
Increased amount of tears
Eye discharge which may be clear, yellow, white, or green
Itchy, irritated, and/or burning eye(s)
Crusting of the eyelids or lashes
Gritty feeling in the eyes
So how do you know if you have Pink Eye?
Eye redness or swelling is a clear indicator of pink eye, but other symptoms can vary depending on the root cause. However, since many of the symptoms are similar, it can be difficult for a healthcare professional to determine the exact cause.
When seeking treatment at a Prognify Urgent Care and Walk-In Clinic, patient history, symptoms, an examination of the eye(s), etc. will be used to come up with a diagnosis. If deemed necessary, a sample of discharge from the infected eye(s) may be collected and sent to a lab in order to determine the form of infection.
